Making sure “place making” is not shorthand for over-development
In 2020 the NSW Government launched the PPPS, a framework to steer future development across the Pyrmont peninsula. The 20-year framework seeks to re-develop the area, increasing density, enabling greater building heights, consolidating building footprints, and enabling the activation of the area as a 24-hour entertainment precinct.
The key reason for this strategy is to enable the NSW Government to pay for the Metro West development and extend the footprint of the current CBD.
Critical is the need to balance the current heritage and character of the area, which provides a village like atmosphere for its resident and worker communities, with the ambitions of the PPPS. These include increasing workers in the area by 23,000 and building 4,200 new residences to house more than 8,000 new people.
The City of Sydney has been tasked as part of the PPPS to find suitable sites across Pyrmont that can accommodate these new targets. This includes up to 20 sites.
Pyrmont Action has met and lobbied for these targets to be reviewed to prevent more high-rise towers being built only to be left vacant with changes in the way people live and work.
Importantly, many sites potentially earmarked will be Strata Titled leading to possible forced sales. Also, we are keen to ensure our waterfront is protected and another Barangaroo is prevented.
